Yarelys Barrios, subcampeona de las Olimpiadas de Beijing 2008 quedo en cuarta posición del lanzamiento del disco en la edición de Londres 2012. LA cubana realizo un lanzamiento de 66.38 metros muy inferior a los 69.11 que hizo la actual campeona Sandra Perkovic de Croacia. Barrios fue superada también por Darya Pishchalnikova con 67.56 y Yanfeng Li con 67.22.
“La temperatura era ideal. Yo me sentía bien, pero ellas lo hicieron mejor. Me doy cuenta de que no se puede llegar a una final olímpica con pocas competencias previas. El nivel del disco es muy alto” dijo Yarelys Barrios en referencia a la falta de topes internacionales que tienen los atletas cubanos.
La delegación cubana tiene algunas esperanzas de medallas en el atletismo Olímpico aunque hasta el momento no ha llegado ningún resultado. Yarisley Silva esta clasificada para la final del salto con pértiga.
