El equipo Cuba de béisbol sub-23 que participó en el torneo en México llegó a la isla con la mitad de sus jugadores después que 12 de ellos desertaran.

Los jugadores que regresaron a Cuba fueron recibidos en el Aeropuerto Internacional José Martí por el Vicepresidente Primero del INDER, Raúl Fornés Valenciano.

Un total de 12 peloteros cubanos aprovecharon el viaje para buscar la libertad en México y uno de ellos ya se encuentra en Estados Unidos.

Los peloteros que regresaron son: Guillermo García García (GRA), Rangel Ramos Pozo (MAY), Rodoleisi Moreno González (SSP), Yuddiel González Torres (CAV), Jonathan Carbó Campoalegre (IJV), Frank Abel Álvarez Díaz (PRI), Naikel Yoel Cruz Zaldívar (MTZ), Marlon Vega Travieso (MAY), Kelbis Rodríguez León (GRA), José Eduardo Santos Escalante (SSP), Iván Prieto González (GRA) y Andrys Pérez García (MTZ).

La cifra de 12 deserciones en un mismo torneo es un récord para un equipo de Cuba en el exterior, la anterior fue en 1996 cuando se quedaron nueve deportistas.
