El Departamento de Transporte de EEUU (USDOT, sus siglas en inglés) emitió el 29 de agosto un comunicado donde anunciaba que repartirá los vuelos a La Habana cancelados por Spirit y Frontier.
Spirit operaba dos vuelos cada día entre Fort Lauderdale y La Habana que la aerolínea canceló el pasado 1 de junio.
Frontier Airlines, de Denver, Colorado, que suspendió su único vuelo diario entre Miami y La Habana por problemas de costo y falta de demanda.
Las compañías que compiten por las rutas que asignará el USDOT son: American Airlines y Delta, con un vuelo diario Miami-La Habana; la aerolínea de carga FedEx, con un vuelo diario de lunes a viernes entre Miami y La Habana; JetBlue, con un vuelo diario, excepto los sábados, Fort Lauderdale-La Habana, y un vuelo los sábados Boston-La Habana; y la aerolínea United and Mesa, un vuelo diario, excepto los sábados, en la ruta Houston-La Habana.
