La Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Monroe anunció este lunes que puso final a una investigación de homicidio de 1991.
La víctima, recién identificada por la oficina del sheriff en lo que se conoció como el «Asesinato de Jane Doe en Valentín», era Wanda Deann Kirkum de 18 años de Hornell en Nueva York.
Su cuerpo fue encontrado el 15 de febrero de 1991 en una zona boscosa cerca de la US 1 cerca de Mile Marker 35.
Mediante el avance de la tecnología, una prueba de ADN pudo ayudar a identificar a Kirkhum así como a su asesino.
La Oficina del Sheriff dijo que su asesino fue identificado como Robert Lynn Bradley, quien fue asesinado en un homicidio en Texas en abril de 1992 a los 31 años.
Los investigadores dijeron que Kikhum nunca fue reportada oficialmente como desaparecida por la policía. Sus dos padres ya han fallecido.
El ADN de Bradley se obtuvo de la escena del crimen de 1991 en los Cayos, dice la Oficina del Sheriff. Ese ADN se comparó recientemente con el ADN de la escena del condado de Tarrant, Texas, donde fue asesinado y se determinó que era una coincidencia. Según los investigadores, hay evidencia que sugiere que Bradley vivió en Miami a fines de noviembre de 1990.
La Oficina del Sheriff dijo que Kirkum fue vista por testigos pidiendo un aventón en Key West el 14 de febrero de 1991. Su cuerpo fue encontrado al día siguiente cerca de Bahía Honda.
Kirkum estaba boca abajo y vestía solo un top de bikini, con el que había sido estrangulada, dicen los investigadores. El examen forense determinó que había sido golpeada y agredida sexualmente antes de ser estrangulada hasta la muerte.
